What gear is recommended to bring for fishing Cedros Island ?

STATEMENT: Our main responsibility is to bring you to this outstanding fishing destination in comfort and get you where the fish is, which is 50% of your fishing trip. But the other 50% is your ability, experience, skills and choosing the right gear and lures to get your fish.

Cedros island has PERFECT weather. It is not too hot as the Gulf, and it is not cold or windy as the California coast thanks to a protected east coast. If you travel with us between June and October all you need to bring is 2 pairs of shorts, sandals, 2 pairs of shirts, a long sleeve and/or windbreaker light jacket, toiletries, sunscreen, a hat or cap, cell phone (Only Verizon doesn't work), sunglasses, and camera. The hotel provides towels, shampoo, soap, but you are welcome to bring yours if prefer.

From some of our most experienced guests, here is a list of gear recommended to bring to fish at Cedros effectively and weight efficient (SPEARFISHING no need to bring leads!).

FROM Mike Ryba of REEBS LURES

If your going to be targeting Bass, Grouper, Sheephead, or Halibut on your Cedros fishing trip there are some recomendations of gear and lures to use. First off, I recommend a Calcutta 401 reel from Shimano. Fill it with 60 or 80 # green Power Pro spectra. As a top shot, I use 40 # Blackwater Flourocarbon for most situations. Last year in the kelp 60 LB top shot was used regulary. I always bring another setup for my topwater baits. Setup #2 is a Shimano Cardiff 201a with 60 # Power Pro and a 30 Flourocarbon top shot. Setup #3 is my Yellowtail setup. I recommend a fast 6:1 gear ratio Avet SX 2 Speed with 80 # Spectra and 40 # top shot.
As far as lures go, I always recommend Reebs Lures. We have a weedless jig called the Kelp Assassin that bounces off those nasty boiler rocks without snagging. The Kelp Assassin is also deadly in the kelp for big Calico Bass. This jig comes highly recommended. Reebs Lures also makes a topwater bait called the Persuader. Put a 10/0 hook on it weedless, and cast for the "avenues" in the kelp twitching it back to the boat. Iv'e had tremendouse results on these 2 baits. Always remmember to bring plenty of iron for those breezing Yellows too. There are times you'll be fishing Calicos and giant Yellowtail will swim right under the boat, so be ready with a surface iron tied on. Bring plenty of swimbaits too. I have found that baitfish patterns work best, and leftovers are always a good part of your tip for your fearless Panga driver.

You can fish with LIVE BAIT. We collect it in the morning before departure at the pier, and at any of the fishing spots we visit. Bring Sabiki and some weights as well as hooks (#6 works best, and circle hooks are best for catch and release). Our boats have live wells.

FROM ESVIN HERNANDEZ

(more details about gear for fishing Cedros Island, contact esvin@cedrosoutdooradventures.com)

I will list model numbers and colors of what works for me the best.

YO-YO JIGS:  Tady 9 (favorite), Tady AA, Tady A2, Tady 4/0, Salas Cp105, Salas 6x jr, Megabaits SURFACE IRONS: Salas 7X 9 (favorite), Candy Bar 112, Tady 45, Kicker 25,

COLORS: mint and white (best), blue and white, chrome and blue, silver and black, Birdshit, sardine colors
**Tady yo-yo jigs work good as mid column jigs also.. Cast out let sink 15 seconds and wind. Bring at least 10 Yo-yo jigs and 6 surface.**

TROLLING LURES: Rapala Xrap 20 is best in blue or green mackarel

LINE:  40 and 50lb test.  The 40 lb works good. If the yellows are biting good 50lb better. I prefer Izorline XXX in smoke tinted color. Tinted color line gets bit better than clear lines. Flourocarbon is not needed when fishing jigs.

CALICO:  5" and 6" swimbaits in Sardine, Anchovy or Smelt patterns. 3/4-1.5 oz leadheads. I fish straight spectra line for the calicos.

FROM TAYLOR PANTEL

If I had to narrow it down to 25-35 lbs of gear.  Here is what I’m going to bring next year:

RODS: (3) 7' rods.  (1) 40# rod, (1) 50# rod, (1) 60# rod.  (1) 8' Heavy bass rod.  65lb spectra.

I recommend fishing exclusively spectra with a short 3' top shot of Flourocarbon, 50 or 60 lb. High speed reels for fishing the yoyo iron and surface iron are a must if you really want to maximize your opportunities.

JIGS: Salas7x heavys are the jig of choice at Cedros.  Blue and white, scrambled egg, all white.  Those are the best 3 colors.  You also want to have some salas7x lights as well in the same colors in case the fish are on the surface. I switch out all my treble hooks on all my jigs to big 10/0 or 11/0 single hooks so those big Cedros yellows cannot pull loose!!! I would bring 3 of each color in the light and the heavy.  Don’t forget to bring an assortment of 5-8" Pearl swimbaits.  Colors of choice would be browns, reds, greens, blues,

Bring leadheads from 3/4-2oz.  Bring 2 pairs of polarized sunglasses.  A sun hat.  All clothing on pangas should be waterproof, fast drying fabric so you stay dry and comfortable.

RODS. 40#,50#,60#

JIGS. ***salas7x heavy .colors blue and white, scrambled egg, all white.

***salas7x light.  colors. same as above

***swimbaits for bass and yellows.  Pearl Swimbaits.  Any colors really they all work.

***High speed reels.

***flex wrap for line cuts

Advil or ibuprofin for those sore muscles after pulling on fish all day.

COOLERS AND FISH CONTAINERS TO CEDROS ISLAND

We recommend that you bring a cooler for your fish, but you should leave it in your car unitl you come back to San Diego. You don't need to bring them to the island because we freeze your fish and provide containers to keep your fish cool until your get back to your car.  If you do decide to bring a cooler to the island, it must be be 14" tall or less.
